Where the hell have I been?

When a (slightly weird) post appeared up here yesterday, you probably began wondering what I’ve been doing for the past few months that’s so much more important than updating my blog.

celty thinking.gif

tl;dr I have no excuse whatsoever.

To cut a long story short, I just haven’t really been doing anything. Well, actually, I haven’t really been in the mood to do anything other than attempt to write fiction (think space mechs, dieselpunk and fancy department stores) and occasionally play a game or watch a supposedly trashy Asian drama (all of them were actually pretty good).

So is everything back to normal now? Am I eagerly trying to catch up with what I’ve missed? No, not really, unless you can count a few anime from this season I’ve been watching. I just feel like writing here again.

usagi pencil.gifWhat about, you ask? No idea, although you’ll probably see even fewer anime-related posts for a while. For now you’ll probably be seeing posts more akin to yesterday’s and maybe some random thoughts about storytelling-related topics (for those of you who like TV Tropes. Yes, that means that my schedule will probably become extremely irregular and possibly infrequent compared to my previous weekly schedule, but some is better than none, right?

Speaking of the future, I may or may not begin streaming in the near future for some reasons that cannot yet be divulged. I can only leave a quick hint in the form of a slightly old tweet.

But for now, I suggest you sit back, relax and watch me review my lunches when I’m too lazy to cook for myself.

ve tea

Hey, I have that tea set!

By the way, if there are any shows that I simply must watch this season (or even from the last year) please let me know. I’ve been out of the game far too long.

I started watching Violet Evergarden and it’s just beautiful. Pure beauty.

Ramen Review: Nongshim Shin Gourmet Spicy

I know I’ve given you radio silence for the last four months(?) but today’s post won’t be where I’ve explain myself. If you want to know where I’ve been, you’re going to have to hand on a little bit longer (I’ve been away so long, what’s another day?)

Today, I’ll be reviewing one of the many instant ramens I’ve recently managed to acquire from the world foods isle of this enormous supermarket that happens to be pretty much opposite my nearest Ikea.

Anyway, on today’s menu is Nongshim’s Shin Noodle Soup Gourmet SPICY (or at least, that’s the name I can gleam from the packaging). As far as I know, this particular variety comes in both pot and brick(?) form. I’m assuming they’re the same, but for reference, I had the pot version because it was cheaper.

So, right of the bat, I was pretty hesitant to touch it, since I’m not the world’s biggest fan of spicy food (anything about a medium at Nando’s will have me buying an entire platter for myself if I have to) and the labelling makes it very clear that this ramen is ‘Gourmet SPICY’ (whatever, that means).

Once I found some food prep gloves, I proceeded to follow the sparce instructions: Empty included sachet on top of noodles, fill with water up to inside mark, microwave for 5 1/2 minutes.

I’ll admit that the colour and smell of the soup was looking pretty scary, so I poured myself a pint of milk, since it looked like I’d be needing it.

Cautiously, with myhands shaking, I took a small mouthful of the bright red concoction. To my surprise it wasn’t really that…wait a minute…hot, HOT!¬†The noodles were accompanied by half my glass of milk.

The only measure of hotness where I live.

It’s not the kind of hot that suddenly hits you in the face after lying dormant for a few seconds, but the rarer kind that slowly crawls all over your tongue and the only way to quench it is to down all 568 mililitres of your pint of milk every three mouthfuls or just keep on eating like an insane masochist who doesn’t mind if their tongue falls off.

That being said, I wouldn’t rank it higher than ‘hot’ on the Nando’s Peri-ometer. Nothing a lot of mayonaise can’t handle. As for taste other that spicyness, I’m going to be totally honest and say it was somewhat lacking. I’ll eat the other one remaining in my cupboard, but I won’t go out of my way to find it again any time soon.

In a nutshell: Spicy but not much else.

So, what do you think? Something simple to get me back into writing more frequently. A post explaining my long absense is to come (hopefully sooner than it took this post to reach you), but for now, I guess I’ll be taking requests for instant ramen and this season’s anime (as in winter 2018) that I should totally watch before next season.

Seasonal Anime: Getting back in the game

It’s been just under a year since I broke my routine of watching seasonal in an attempt to make more time for studying for school. In the end I just ended up spending more time picking up many more other hobbies. Heck, I even built a computer for the first time while I was at it.

Now with all the time in the world over the summer holidays, I thought I would catch up with all the anime I missed while getting my teeth into this season’s rather enticing offerings.

Already at week 8, and with less than a fortnight until the start of term, I can safely say that I probably watched more anime during my exams.¬†To put it into perspective, there are 14 shows that I’ve marked as currently watching on MAL but in reality, I’ve only been watching about 4 of them.

I have a newfound respect for my younger self’s determination to watch each new episode the moment it became available on its respective streaming site. Right now I can barely even remember which day they air on, let alone be bothered to follow 20 shows.

At least now I understand why people tend to just focus on binge watching…

I may as well say what I’ve been watching, though:

I’m still alive, but…

As the title reads, I’m still alive and so is this blog. However, I probably won’t be posting for a while since my exams are starting in less than a week.

I did have a Ghost in the Shell review scheduled for a couple weeks ago, but, after 45 minutes in an empty screen and an angry chat with the cinema’s manager, I still haven’t  had the chance to see it. I was also going to talk about Persona 5 at some point, but only 2 hours into my play-through, I don’t think I’ve experienced enough of the game to say something worth anything.

I might get some time to post something short towards the end of exam season, but for now, don’t expect a post from this blog in the next six weeks or so…

I’ll still be on Twitter occasionally, though (when I’m not cramming equations and vocab).

Mystery Blogger Award

Thanks to Matthew from Matt-in-the-Hat for nominating me! Also thanks the creator (Enigma from Okoto Engima’s Blog).

  1. Display the award logo on your blog.
  2. List the Rules.
  3. Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  4. Mention the creator of the award and provide a link as well.
  5. Tell your readers three things about yourself.
  6. Answer five questions from the nominee.
  7. Nominate anywhere from ten to twenty bloggers.
  8. Notify the bloggers by leaving a comment on their blog.
  9. Ask your nominees any five questions of your choice, including one weird or funny question.
  10. Share the link to your best post.

3 things about me:

  1.  Despite being a total sucker for shoujo/jousei manga and rom-coms, my friends seem to think that I only ever watch action movies.
  2. ¬†Even though I’m technically grade 4 in piano and violin, I can’t read music score for the life of me.
  3. Even though I’m always seen in the morning with a cup of Costa in my hand, I actually don’t like hot drinks that much.

¬†Matthew’s 5 questions

1. If you were in a story, would you like to be a good guy or bad guy (or good girl or bad)

Probably the bad guy, since it’s much more fun to mess with someone that be the one being messed with.

2. Are you night owl or early bird?

Well I like to go to bed in the afternoon and wake up at around midnight. Does that count as both?

3. What is one movie you feel is a guilty pleasure?

Well, apparently, I’m not allowed to like¬†High School Musical anymore…

4. What’s your favorite superhero?

I’m really tempted to say Aquaman purely because of this web series I saw a while back, but then again I’m not really a big enough fan of superheroes to have a favourite.

5. What would you rather have, wings and fly anywhere or the power to rewind time?

I feel like the power to rewind time would actually be much more useful. I mean, think of all that lottery money I could win and the number of time I could get full marks in exams…

My 5 Questions

  1. What’s the one trope/clich√© you can’t stand?
  2.  Would you rather live the rest of your life without sweet food or meat products?
  3. What genre would your life be?
  4.  Do you prefer tea or coffee?
  5. What’s your favourite food that isn’t native to your country?

My Nominations (in no particular order)

My Obsession With Secondary Ships

This is actually the answer I promised on Day¬†16 of my 30 Day Anime Challenge¬†where I actually couldn’t tell you my ultimate, one and only, ¬†One True Pairing. Since then I have thought about this at great length and after hundreds of shredded post-it notes and intense arguments with myself, I have finally decided upon a winner…

Ban and Elaine (from The Seven Deadly Sins) have one of the most tragic yet beautiful stories I have ever known. I’m no a fan of tragedy, but I still love this ship more than even the likes of Royai and Shinkane. I don’t know what it is that I love so much about these two, but I do know that without them, I probably wouldn’t have continued watching the Seven Deadly Sins to the end and even be excited about the next season (I still haven’t gotten round to getting up to date with the manga but I’ve heard that something good happens).

But all¬†that thinking also made me come to¬†a (slightly unrelated) conclusion about my OTP preferences…

Shirayuki and Zen are probably sweet enough to give you diabetes, but¬†it’s not my main OTP for the series.

I know, shocking.

shirazenFor some reason, I always find myself rooting for those two supporting characters more than the main ones. Especially if you’ve read the most recent chapters of¬†Akagami no Shirayukihime, you’ll know that at this point, there’s no disputing the Kiki x Mitsuhide ship but I’ve¬†been shipping them since before the anime even came out.

It isn’t just with Akagami no Shirayukihime but almost anything¬†with secondary ships¬†or where romance isn’t even a man focus of the plot. It’s almost creepy¬†that I care so much more about some characters that don’t get anywhere near as much screen time as the main characters.

Heck,¬†I’m still reading this josei manga about a creepy obsessive¬†monk (seriously mate, just leave her alone) just because I really like the dynamic between two of the heroine’s coworkers in a¬†subplot that gets about¬†one page of development every 10 years.

I don’t know if other people do this but I still think it’s kind of weird…

30 Day Anime Challenge

My (finally completed) 30 Day Anime Challenge!

shoujo ramen

Throughout the month of November I’ll be doing a 30 day anime challenge. I figured this might be a chance to share a little bit more about my interests (and actually post regularly for once).

Here’s the plan…
